I am drawn to the creative process and find the allure of working in clay irresistible. Within moments elemental earth can be transformed into a functional vessel or a sculptural figure. In this way I am able to give expression to that which I find both beautiful and meaningful.
In it's simplicity, my objective is to create work that is evocative yet pleasing to the aesthetic senses. Figurative work is expressive in nature, reflecting inner stirrings. Vessels speak to the elegance and comfort of simple shapes and function. The artistic dimension of the work, however, resides not only in the form but in the decoration. I prefer to wood fire, leaving the pieces either unglazed or with a simple glaze which is receptive to the ash and flame. The beauty of the work is thus determined by the interplay of the five elements: earth, air, water, fire and wood. I find that working intuitively and with an element of spontaneity adds to the beauty and ultimate harmony of the image.
In the end, it is the act of creating, of being in the moment which most appeals to me. It is in this moment of creating that the essence of a piece comes to life.
