Artist's Statement

Although I grew up in northern California, my parents were captivated by the Southwest. My dad had spectacular slides of Anasazi ruins and the sandstone cliffs of Glen Canyon which I never tired of seeing. Even today those images are etched in my memory.

By the early '60's I was traveling on my own - to experience firsthand the sculpted shapes and the vibrant colors of the Southwest. I feel that if there are "past lives" then I have lived in the canyons of Utah or on the high desert of New Mexico, making pottery or creating pictographs in the shadow of an overhang.
I love the vast landscape and the delicate detail Nature provides. A leaf edged in sunlight, a reflection captured in a sandstone pool, or light filtering through the rain forest prompts me to get out my camera and see if I can preserve that moment.

When I see something extraordinarily beautiful, I have this strong desire to press it into my body. I want it to become part of me. Photography and painting are the closest I can get to doing that.
