Figurative Clay Sculpture

Artist Statement

I am inspired by the depth and breadth of the clay tradition in the southwest. The tradition of hand-built work and the spiritual nature of the craft speak directly to the way in which I create my own sculpture.

Each sculpture is individually hand-built and one of a kind. I work in the medium of clay, an ancient material bound intrinsically to the earth from which it originates. By its very nature, it lends itself to the organic way in which I work. Each piece seems to evolve naturally from conception to completion. I begin with an idea, an emotion, an abstract concept, or a descriptive word or phrase. As the piece grows, my original concept evolves, solidifies, or in some cases, changes completely.

My work harkens back to the ancient form of goddess sculpture, yet I feel that it is also thoroughly modern. I see my figures as archetypes rather than individuals. They are celebrations of the flowing curves of the female form. They are the embodiment of basic feelings and universal truths. In this way, they are meant to be symbolic of the intangible rather than representative of the tangible. They are the iconic expressions of my ideas and emotions.
